Why Student Visas Are Being Refused and How to Avoid It

At O’Sullivan and Ruffilli, we’re seeing a surge in student visa refusals. A common theme? Applications that lack specific, career-focused reasoning for studying in Australia.

Australian immigration officers are no longer accepting vague intentions such as  “looking for a job” or “starting a business” back home after graduation. The Department of Home Affairs now expects a clear link between the course, future career goals, and how it all fits into the applicant’s life back home.

What Immigration Wants to See

To strengthen a student visa application, it’s essential to explain:

  • A specific career or business plan in your home country

  • Why this Australian course is necessary (and not available locally) and how it can enhance career goals

  • How the course will lead to better career outcomes or income

  • Supporting evidence — such as a letter from an employer confirming relevance

Make It Personal and Practical

The more realistic and detailed the explanation, the better. The Department of Home Affairs looks for a logical return on the educational investment, not just a desire to study abroad. Bear in mind that the Student Visa is a temporary visa and the student does declare that they do not intend to remain in Australia permanently
