DIWALI – INDIAN NEW YEAR AND CELEBRATION OF LIGHTS

ree

Over late October to November 2025 Diwali celebrations have been popping up across the Australia and the world, with the main day, the Indian New Year of the festival having been celebrated Tuesday 21 October 2025.

The Festival of Lights, is the biggest event of the Hindu calendar and is also celebrated by Sikhs, Jains, and some members of the Buddhist community. Given that the Indian community in Australia is one of the largest migrant communities in the country, the event is popular and well known.

It is particularly associated with Lakshmi, the goddess of prosperity, and marks the beginning of the financial year in India. Variants of the festival are also celebrated by Sikhs, Jains, and some Buddhists. Diwali is the five-day "Festival of Lights," celebrated by Hindus, Jains, and Sikhs, and is a time for new beginnings and the triumph of light over darkness. The festival is characterized by lighting diyas (oil lamps), setting off fireworks, decorating homes, and exchanging gifts and sweets. The specific dates change annually and fall between October and November, often coinciding with the new moon.

O’Sullivan & Ruffilli extend Best wishes for Diwali and for the New Year ahead!!!🙏
